Work, School, Sports Performance Enhancement

Performing, the act of doing, involves three capacities: the ability or talent, the capability to sustain one’s focus, and the desire or motivation to carry through. Performance enhancement is facilitating the improvement in one or all of the capacities, consequently allowing the person performing to become all that she or he can be. Implicit in this perspective is a commitment for excellence. Personal excellence is an engagement with oneself to draw upon your inherent resources and reserves within your mind and body to develop these capacities to their utmost.
The greatest barriers in our pursuit of our capacities for excellence are psychological, imposed upon ourselves by ourselves, often outside of our awareness. Our beliefs of what we can or can’t do are self-imposed limits that impact our performance outcomes. As we change our beliefs about limits, so do the limits of our capacities change and expand.
Common blocks or barriers that impede a person’s strivings toward success include but are not limited to the following:
- Memories of past frustrations, failures or injuries
- Fear of criticism, ridicule, and judgments
- Internal beliefs that foster negative self-talk
- Anxiety, resentments, and/or burnout
- Phobias—social and peer relationships, flying, driving
- Perfectionism and/or anticipation of ineptness or failure
- Attempting to live up to someone else’s expectations or goals
- Fear of success, worry and self-doubt (low self-confidence)

As performance enhancement therapists, we can facilitate optimal results in careers, education and athletics as well as in interpersonal relationships. We focus on the positive untapped resources already available to the performer. For example, using one’s capacity to imagine what would be experienced (mentally, emotionally and physically) when free of the blocks or barriers, then using stress reduction techniques coupled with EMDR procedures, to strengthen these experiences. By accessing the power within, the results include increased self-confidence and esteem, positive self-talk, increased motivation and a desire to perform.
